Royal Hideaway

A 10 mile bike ride around the hotel zone and golf course. I passed an aviary, where pelicans found the living easy.

A tourist bus struck a motorcyclist, who was very angry at the driver, who kept shouting, "No segura! No segura!"

Ventanas for breakfast, where I taught the chef to make eggs florentine, now called Huevos Miguel. Morning on the beach. Lunch at Spices. Afternoon on the beach. 4 drinks today--those beach boys keep coming by and I forgot how to say no in Spanish. I had a caipirinha, a banana daiquiri, a glass of chardonnay, and a Singapore sling. Carol went to stretching class, and we met for a last Spanish lesson with Isaac, which took place next to a table of Sunoco dealers here for a reward week, They stood out throughout the week with their mountain twangs and bellies. Today, they appeared to have been caught in a mudslide somewhere.

I read a whole book today. Seldom have I read a book in one day. It was The Reader, by Bernhard Schlink, a German. It begins as a bildungsroman (love that word!) but becomes a novel of moral choice, complexity, and uncertainty about the holocaust and the Germans. Superb book.

We chose Palazzo for out last night's dinner. Excellent portabello mushroom, braised beef, lasagna, and espresso with a gorgeous view of the hotel, the ocean, and the lights of Cozumel in the distance.
