JOSIE COMES TO RHODE ISLAND
CONT'D

On Saturday, we packed up and drove to the Roger Williams Zoo, which has become one of the country's leading zoos, set in a gorgeous park. There was a toddler area with swings for Josie, and a genuine antique carousel, which began in clinging timidity, but quickly gave way to squeals of delight.

We squeezed in a couple of giraffes, seals, and penguins, and then it was time to drop Carol at the airport for her flight to Cleveland and Keila's shower. Marjorie, Josie, and I continued on to New York, arriving in New Haven at 4:00 PM for......you guessed it.....Pepe's Pizza! Josie ate up a storm--feta cheese, rice cake, zucchini, tomatos, and her favorite...Cheerios. She loves the taste and the crunch. It is amazing to watch the fine dexterity of her finger and thumb as she plucks one at a time. But she didn't particularly care for the pizza. We had a spinach, mushroom, and onion with sauce and mootz (mozzarella), which Marjorie pronounced the best she had ever eaten. Of course, I agree. We had to leave an especially large tip for the mess that Josie left behind.

Back in New York, Andy and Neal joined us for a late supper of Burmese takeout. They were back from Amsterdam, and on their way later that evening to Selihot services.

Sunday morning, I took Josie out to Russ and Daughters to get some Nova, some whitefish salad, some sturgeon, and a couple of Kossar's bialys. When the countermen saw Josie, they began to shout, "Hey Joshie!! Hi Joshie!! It's the pickle girl!" She flirted with them, and they gave her her favorite--a sour pickle, which she sucked on and devoured over the course of the next hour.

I took her to the park around the corner. She squeals when she sees the swings. She wouldn't let go of the pickle in the swing, and, when she discovered that she could swing with only one hand holding on, tried it with no hands. She flopped around like a rag doll and thought better of it, holding on prudently with one hand again.

After breakfast, I returned the car to their lot and cabbed up to Pennsylvania Station. I started writing this web page in the waiting area, and, although I was sure they never announced the train, I guess they must have, and I missed it. So, I continue it now in the waiting area once more, waiting for the next train at 2:00 PM. I'll pick Carol up at the airport tonight.

We both had the most wonderful time with Josie. Everyone agrees that she resembles me in one respect--she is very high maintenance, knows just what she wants, and throws a shit fit when she doesn't get it. She is complete bundle of perfect joy, as well. She is like the fish at Russ and Daughters and the pizza at Pepe's--I can't get enough of it.
