JOSIE AT ONE WEEK (CONT'D)
OCTOBER 20-21, 2001

Sunday morning, we all slept late. Andy and Neal biked over. We spent the morning with Jonathan, helping to close up the pool for the winter, by cleaning it, flushing out the filter and pipes, throwing in horrible chemicals to kill every living thing for 6 months. Somehow, these are supposed to disappear by the summer (one never changes the water), so you can swim again. It's more a question of faith, I think, than chemistry.

Neal and I biked to Russ and Daughters, just around the corner for bagels, the world's most divine Nova Scotia lox, chive cheese, eggplant salad, whitefish-salmon salad, and a medium-sized whitefish, sweet and juicy. Also two tomatoes and some pickles. Barney Greengrass has been our mecca in New York for dairy deli, and it still is for eat-in, but for strictly takeout, Russ and Daugters is true heaven.

I wished I could have stayed. It was such a good day...all of us together. I drove home alone, slept for an hour at a rest stop in Connecticut, and made it home by 9 PM, with plans to return Wednesday. This is addicting.
